  • Description: The air mass sensor records the air mass flowing into the engine. Its signal is required for the calculation of a number of engine functions. It is a central component in the areas of engine control, air supply, and emission control.
    Technical information
    - The air mass sensor model commonly used today is the hot-film air mass sensor. Depending on the manufacturer and type, this involves one or two electrically heated sensor elements protruding into the air flow. The temperature of the sensor elements is maintained at a constant. The air flow extracts heat from the sensor. The greater the air flow, the more energy is required in order to maintain the constant temperature of the sensor. The analog or digital output signal is calculated on this basis together with the manufacturer-specific characteristic map.
    Diagnostic information
    - The output signal of the air mass sensor can also be easily read out using a multimeter, oscilloscope, or a diagnostic tester. However, the assessment of the read-out data often presents a challenge for the diagnostic specialist.
    - If the set-point value is not achieved or is exceeded, this does not necessarily mean that there is a fault on the air mass sensor. Leaking intake manifolds, blocked air filters, boost pressure, compression, injection, and ignition can also have a significant impact on the intake air mass. An accurate measurement is therefore only possible if these disturbance variables can be ruled out. The easiest way to do this is by removing the air mass sensor and hermetically sealing it, thus ensuring that the measurement is not distorted due to air flow around the sensor. If the set-point values are now achieved, there is no sensor malfunction. Set-point values and detailed test instructions for many of our air mass sensors can be found in our technical information.
