  • Description: Fuel pumps are used to deliver fuel from the fuel tank to the engine, both in the required quantity and with the corresponding necessary pressure. Electrical in-line pumps or pump modules are used for this. In-line fuel pumps are located in the fuel line. These are available in vehicle-specific versions or versions that can be used universally in a variety of pressure and power stages. Fuel delivery modules sit in the fuel tank. This model is favored by vehicle manufacturers for its cleanliness, low noise generation, and reduced tendency to produce vapor bubbles. Pressure regulators, fluid-level sensors, and fuel filters are often also attached to pump modules. In vehicles with high-pressure injection, such as direct gasoline injectors or diesel engines, the required fuel is provided by a mechanical fuel pump. However, an in-line or pump module can also be used in these vehicles as a pre-feeder pump to support the mechanical pump.
    Technical information
    - In electric fuel pumps, the fuel is not separate from the electrical drive but is instead intended to flow through the electrical drive. This provides optimal cooling and lubrication of the electric fuel pump. There is no risk of fire due to sparks or overheating, since air is suppressed by the fuel on the relevant parts. Especially when using a universal fuel pump, for example as a replacement for a mechanical fuel pump in vehicles equipped with a carburetor, the correct installation position must be observed in order to prevent the formation of gas bubbles and the resulting increased pump wear.
    Diagnostic information
    - The electrical actuation, pressure, and flow rate must be checked during diagnostics. Nowadays, many vehicles come fitted with a controlled fuel pump. These are supplied with a pulse width modulation signal. This allows the flow rate to be controlled, which has a positive impact on the power consumption. Here the pumps are no longer controlled directly by the engine control unit, but instead via a separate pump control unit. This must be taken into account when measuring the voltage with the multimeter in order to prevent any measurement errors.
