  • Description: Electro-pneumatic valves from PIERBURG are used for the switching and control of intake manifolds, secondary air systems, exhaust gas flaps, and air conditioning units as well as for the implementation of comfort and safety functions. With a market share of 65%, Pierburg is the European market leader in this segment. A daily production rate of 45,000 pieces enables the production of 250 electric valves for series production. Electric valves from PIERBURG are used by almost all renowned manufacturers.
    Technical information
    - Electro-pneumatic valves: In the same way that switches and dimmers function in an electrical circuit, electro-pneumatic valves operate with a high level of accuracy and excellent dynamics in the pneumatic system of the vehicle. Together with a pneumatic actuator (»pressure box«), this is how flaps and valves are actuated, for example the EGR valve or the wastegate flap on the turbocharger. Almost all vehicles use vacuum as an auxiliary energy form (manifold vacuum or vacuum pump). New vehicles are often fitted with multiple electro-pneumatic valves.
    - Hydraulic valves: Hydraulic valves have been specially developed for use in the fuel system, e.g. as an activated carbon filter regeneration valve, isolating valve, or cut-off valve for the direct gasoline injection.
    - Recirculating air valves: During coasting, the recirculating air valve opens a bypass from the thrust side of the compressor to the intake side. Together with the boost pressure control valve, it enables the turbocharger behavior to adapt quickly to the driving situation. It therefore contributes to the driving dynamics, noise reduction, and the reduction of the turbo lag during load changes.
    - Control valves for camshaft adjustment: Control valves guide the oil flow through various oil channels to the respective chambers in the hydraulic camshaft adjuster. The camshaft is then twisted relative to the camshaft gear and the valve timings are altered.
    Diagnostic information
    - Firstly, the electrical actuation of an electric valve should be checked by the engine control unit and, if necessary, any switching relays or fuses.
    - Electro-pneumatic valves require auxiliary energy in the form of vacuum. If a control pressure of at least 390 mbar – which corresponds to an absolute pressure of 610 mbar – is not achieved, the entire vacuum system must be checked for leakages, e.g. using a vacuum hand pump, and the damaged part must be replaced. Insufficient vacuum can also be caused by a worn vacuum pump. Black smoke, erratic engine running, lack of power, or engine misfires may also be caused due to a lack of vacuum. A "turbo lag", i.e. insufficient performance when throttling after coasting, may indicate a recirculating air valve fault. For faults that are attributed to the control valves for the camshaft adjustment, the gear and timing chain of the camshaft adjustment should first be checked and the timing chain retensioned if necessary.
