- Description: For over 30 years, vehicle manufacturers have trusted in the experience and quality of PIERBURG when it comes to the development and production of exhaust gas recirculation systems. This trust and our expertise have transformed PIERBURG into a global market leader. PIERBURG offers all the components of a modern EGR system – from simple pneumatic EGR valves to the cooled high-pressure and low-pressure EGR components that are now commonplace.
Technical information
- Directly behind the cylinders, exhaust gas is removed and mixed back into the intake air. This ensures that less oxygen gets into the cylinder, and less oxygen means a lower combustion temperature. With the exhaust gas recirculation process, the nitrogen oxide in the raw exhaust gas is reduced by up to 70% and the air flow is also significantly reduced. In gasoline engines, this also reduces carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption.
- Due to increasingly stringent emission standards, an increasing amount of exhaust gas needs to be recirculated. This results in a great number of components being added to the EGR system over time. Vehicles that are compliant with the Euro emission standard typically use a combination of a cooled high-pressure and low-pressure EGR. In addition to the high-pressure and low-pressure EGR valve itself, a modern EGR system like this also contains a regulating throttle, swirl regulation flaps, an air mass sensor, one or more EGR coolers and an exhaust gas flap, for example.
Diagnostic information
- Due to the interplay of numerous components, it is often the case that faults do not appear on the component that is actually defective. A fault in the EGR system is usually detected by the air mass sensor and interpreted in different ways depending on the vehicle manufacturer. It is therefore necessary to carry out a check of the entire EGR system including all components. Even in the event of a carbonized EGR valve (the most frequently occurring fault), all of the connected components including the hosing must be checked for contamination.
- The cooled EGR system presents a particular challenge for the diagnostic capabilities of a repair shop. EGR coolers are cooled using water. In the event of a leakage, the water is added via the exhaust gas recirculation of the combustion system. The symptoms here are identical to those of a defective cylinder head gasket. - Condition: New
